Program Successes, Fundraising Challenges

In tough times we look for new ways to get the message out about Atlas Corps, I think posting a blog twice a month is probably a good way to share the ups and downs of being a nonprofit founder.
Program Successes.
The most bizarre nature of Atlas Corps these days is how successful our program is. No matter how you measure the program (Fellows' evaluations and stories, Host evaluations, # of applicants for next year), Atlas Corps is going great. We are in the middle of our application process and have received nearly 600 applications for 12-15 positions. These candidates come from 67 different countries. However, despite these successes, fundraising really is a challenge.
Fundraising Challenges.
Despite the Washington Post profile last month that named me "a natural fundraiser." I really struggle with how to raise money for the organization. In the long run we have a strong model of sustainability, but the long run is not today. 66% of our program is covered by the Host organization cost share, but that means that I still need to raise thousands of dollars each day. Thankfully people have been generous, however there is seemingly little correlation between success and money raised. For example, we doubled the size of our program in 2008, but foundations and donors do not double their donation to you. These days you are lucky if they renew.
Motivation.
What keeps me going strong are the blog posts on this site. The Fellows themselves are doing great work and together we are building a strong organization. I think in tough times we need to maintain a steady hand and stay focused on the big picture.
