Making the experience count...
by Becky Gitonga, Sunday, Sep 20, 09
Three weeks ago, I took the plane from Kenya to head back into the US. This time on a management development program that provides the opportunity to work for a year within a non-profit organization here in the US. My host organization during this time will be Service for peace (www.serviceforpeace.org), an organization that focuses on service and learning opportunities as a medium to promote communities of peace whille adrresing social needs. No doubt the opportunities to learn, create new networks, explore and analyze are enormous. A conscious mind, a powerful will and a great attitude are some of the few things to keep close in keeping plugged to it all. Every opportunity, every experience should count: - • Being part of a team that is championining biking and walking Eco-tours within DC is a great expereince to see how US non-profits apply events as a way to promote and raise awareness of their initiatives and causes. • Witnessing a domestic incidence at the neighbours is a great opportunity to analyze how the emergency response is coordinated, whether after the 911 call is made or after a neighbor calls the police concerned about the ongoing events. It is also a highlight of the daily social needs that every society has to deal with in making the needed services accessible. • The visit to a Government office in order to obtain a certificate for the organization’s office provides an opportunity to draw parallels or differences on Government issuance of services to its citizens and businesses. I am excited about all these prospects. More so, I am determined to have an experience that will go beyond my expectations and beyond the goals that I have set to achieve. At the end of it all, I must have a clear sense of goals achieved, lessons learned and a new zeal moving forth. Well, how about you keep updated with me throughout the year to see how it is going?
