Benefits & Responsibilities:
Selected Atlas Corps Fellows will receive a great number of benefits and also assume a certain number of responsibilities. We encourage you to download and read the “Fellow Agreement” to have a more detailed understanding of these benefits and responsibilities. Here is a brief list for your reference:

BENEFITS:

Visa Expenses:
Selected candidates will be expected to pay for their travel to the U.S. Embassy or Colombian Consulate and pay the initial visa expenses. If approved, Atlas Corps will reimburse the visa expenses, but not the travel to the Embassy/Colombian Consulate.

Training:
Fellows will receive 10 days of advance training and orientation in the month of August – a few days in their home country and a few days overseas. In addition, Fellows will be enrolled in an on-going training program while in the U.S. and Colombia, generally on the last Friday of every month. Fellows will receive free housing and a food stipend during the pre-placement orientation and training.

Placement at a Colombian or U.S. citizen sector organization:
Fellows will be placed for a full time, 51-week, volunteer position at an outstanding Colombian or U.S. citizen sector organization.

Health Insurance:
Fellows will be enrolled in a basic health insurance plan in the U.S. or Colombia

Travel:
Economy class round-trip airline ticket from home country to fellowship placement.

Living Stipend:
Fellows placed in the U.S. will receive $14,250 and Fellows volunteering in Bogotá, Colombia will receive about $7,200 during their one-year fellowship. The stipend is sufficient to cover basic living expenses, including housing, food and transportation. This is more than U.S. citizens receive when they participate in a similar domestic program called AmeriCorps VISTA. Nonetheless it is not a lot of money, but enough for basic needs including food, housing and transportation.

End of Service Award:
After completing the program in good standing and returning to their home country, Fellows receive a $2,000 End of Service Award and their $500 deposit back for a total of $2,500.

Alumni Network:
After completing the program in good standing, Fellows will be included in a prestigious alumni network to continue learning from each other and supporting each other’s work.

COSTS:

Deposit:
Fellows are required to give a $500 deposit after being accepted due on the first day of orientation. This deposit will be returned after they return to their home country, provided they have finished the program in good standing. Under exceptional circumstances, this deposit may be waived or reduced, but the idea is that if the Fellow cannot afford the deposit they will ask someone to sponsor their deposit while they are on the fellowship.

Travel to Capital:
Fellows who do not live in their home country’s capital will receive up to $250 to travel to the capital and report for training. If the travel expenses are over $250 the remainder must be paid by the Fellow.

Other Personal Expenses:
There may be other expenses Fellows may incur. For the most part, however, if they live simply and within their budget, there are few additional costs for a Fellow to participate in the program. Additional personal expenses, including travel, entertainment, etc. will be covered by the Fellow. Personal expenses will not be reimbursed.

Please keep in mind:
Candidates who are preliminarily accepted, but do not receive their visa will be responsible for all of their visa related expenses.
