Why Cloud Computing?? I say why "NOT" ..
by Shamila Keyani, Tuesday, Aug 31, 10

Many times I hear people complaining about their organization’s IT infrastructure, affordability, resources, obsolete software/platform, lack of data access especially when network is down, unsatisfactory performance of IT staff etc. Their focus stays mostly on fixing the IT related problems rather than focusing on the mission and goals of their organizations. For such organizations adapting “Cloud computing” model might be the best option. It definitely means more productivity. People usually ask “So what does cloud computing has to offer” and I say “WHAT NOT” . Cloud Computing is the future of computing and is soon to transform the way we see technologies and services.

Cloud computing, in short is a platform that delivers software, platform, and infrastructure through remote file serves. In other words the data can be accessed and stored on servers (somewhere in the world) rather than your own machines. Does this sound bit familiar???? Like everyone I will also state you the example of Gmail, online shopping and other social networking tools. For now just consider them the best examples (more blogs on different types of clouds will be uploaded soon). You can access the mentioned services anywhere in the world on your system as well as the mobile devices. The only requirement is fast and reliable Internet connection. Cloud is unleashing its benefits for profits as well as non-profits.

Some real benefits of Cloud computing are:

  • Low Maintenance Cost: – The maintenance of the services is the responsibility of vendor. Also even with low specification hardware the applications will run fine as they are stored in the cloud and not on your system.
  • Accessibility: – you can access it anywhere in the world using digital devices.
  • On Demand Service: – Only pay for what you use and demand. The model is known as “Pay per use model”.
  • Flexibility: – Add/remove the applications needed without worrying about the network issues and versions conflicts.
  • Updated Services: – Always get the licensed and updated software and services.
  • Data Recovery:- Data is always recovered especially during disasters.(the back of data on cloud is usually on multiple servers)
  • Resource Pooling:- A large pool of virtual resources ( hardware, software, platform).
  • Productive IT Staff: – IT staff will be able to assist the organization by staying focus.
