Let’s expand your self-care calendar that can help you to get ideas of how to refill your positivity in Washington, DC and its neighborhood in the early fall. It still works when you’re on a budget.

  • September. Swim in the ocean and don’t ride a wild horse. Four-hours ride with $5 for tolls each way, sunscreen, and your favorite swimsuit — that’s all you need to enjoy warm Atlantic waves under not-so-burning sunshine. Closest and less crowded place is Rehoboth Beach and it’s great if you need to rush back to DC same day. Or you can drive a half an hour further to visit Assateague Island. Be aware of soft-shell crabs served in multiple seafood restaurants till mid-September, pragmatic seagulls, and beautiful wild ponies, that are dangerous to come close but gorgeous to observe. You can try to reserve a campsite or cabin next to the beach there, but do not prevent yourself from visiting Tripadvisor’s 2nd best island in the US Chincoteague Island and its campgrounds, if you have a chance. Or view one of NASA rocket launches nearby.
  • October. Go camping in Shenandoah. While it’s not so hot anymore, but the nights are still glorious, go hiking on historical Elizabeth Furnace trail. Have a picnic on a riverside and go canoeing at the Shenandoah River Raymond R. “Andy” Guest Jr. State Park. If you want to count stars while staying overnight, visit Reserve America website way before to check the availability or call the Front Royal Campground for last minute reservation or even walk-in placement. You’ll need just a sunscreen, six hours round-trip ride, tent and sleeping bag, some food, water, and $20-$40 for camping fee for a night.
