Research Fellow of Demography - Role Description:
PAI is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic, resourceful and experienced nonprofit professional from India to join the team as a PAI-Atlas Corps Fellow / Research Fellow of Demography. Candidates must have 3-8 years of relevant nonprofit experience, at least a bachelor's degree, and speak and write English fluently. A master's degree in demography is strongly preferred for this position.
The Research Fellow of Demography will lead the research effort to update the PAI publication Why Population Matters and work with communications staff to incorporate data into an interactive website. The Fellow will be expected to provide demographic expertise and advice to PAI staff in the quantitative and demographic aspects of their work in reproductive health and international population policy research and advocacy.
Responsibilities:
- Review current Why Population Matters from 1997 and determine, with research department staff, a new outline and section assignments. Determine data needs for the sections, work with PAI staff to collect the data, prepare tables, charts and maps, and prepare analysis of the data. Write relevant sections and review all sections.
- As time permits, provide analytical support for select other reports and publications, both within PAI and to outside organizations.
- Collect and analyze information from a wide variety of sources, including interviews with outside experts (including international experts), the PAI and other libraries, population and health sciences publications, databases, the internet, and professional conferences and meetings.
- Collaborate with colleagues on a broad range of population-related research and analysis.
- Work collaboratively as part of the PAI research team to review drafts and edit colleagues' research, fact-check and proofread PAI publications, footnote sources, compile bibliographies.
- Compute statistical information for use in research studies and create graphs, charts, and tables.
- Represent PAI's and own work in presentations before targeted audiences.
- Identify targeted audiences and vehicles for outside publication of PAI work.
- Respond to internal and external requests for information on PAI's research topics with a focus on demography.
- Monitor global and country level demographic trends (e.g. population projections).
Qualifications:
- Believe strongly that improving individual well-being and preserving global resources are means to achieve social change.
- Master's degree in demography strongly preferred, or bachelor's degree in demography and several years experience working as a demographer.
- 3-5 years related work experience; including work experience as a demographer.
- Excellent research, analytical, and quantitative skills.
- Ability to communicate complex technical issues to a policy and advocacy-oriented audience.
- Ability to work closely with other researchers and manage time between multiple research projects.
- Experience/interest creating interactive databases on the internet preferred.
- Web design experience preferred.
- Experience conducting population-related research and ability to identify important demographic/ population issues and related policy concerns preferred.
- Knowledge and field experience in public health, epidemiological, and development preferred.
- Understand the intersection between research, reproductive health programs and policies and international development helpful.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Excellent command of the English language.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc).
- Proactive and flexible nature with reliable follow-through and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated capacity and initiative to solve problems with energy and positive attitude.
- Team player with a strong sense of humor and creativity.
